 I. [שָׁבַח] verb Pi`el soothe, still (Arabic be free from care, etc., Jen ZA 1 (1886),188;iv (1889),269, compare Assyrian pašâ—u, grow calm, so Ba Esther 9 Schulth Lex.); —

Pi`el Imperfect 3 masculine singular sf יְשַׁבְּחֶ֑נָּה Proverbs 29:11 he stilleth it, i.e. רוּחוֺ his temper (Bi Toy read חָשַׁךְאַמּוֺ ); 2 masculine singular sf תְּשַׁבְּחֵם Psalm 89:10 thou stillest them, i.e. waves ("" גֵּאוּת הַיָּם).

Hiph`il Participle (probably Masoretic error for Pi`el מְשַׁבֵּחַ) מַשְׁבִּיחַ שְׁאוֺן יַמִּים Psalm 65:8 stilling the roar of the seas.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שָׁבַח not used in Kal; prop. to soothe, to stroke; Arabic سبح to swim, which is done by stroking the water; hence

Piel

(1) to still the waves, Psalms 89:10 (mulcere fluctus, Virg. Æn. i. 70); anger, Proverbs 29:11. Compare חִלָּה.

(2) to praise, pr. to soothe with praises (Arabic سَبَّحَ, Eth. ሰብሐ፡ id.), Ecclesiastes 8:15 especially God, Psalms 63:4, 117:1 147:12.

(3) to pronounce happy, Ecclesiastes 4:2 (where שַׁבֵּחַ stands for מְשַׁבֵּחַ). Compare Chald.

Hiphil, i.q. Piel No. 1, to still (waves), Psalms 65:8.

Hithpael, followed by בְּ to boast in anything, Psalms 106:47; 1 Chronicles 16:35.
