שָׁאוֹן m. (from the root שָׁאָה

(1)  noise, tumult, as of waters, Psalms 65:8 of a great crowd of men, Isaiah 5:14, 13:4 24:8 of war, Amos 2:2; Hosea 10:14 of clamour, Psalms 74:23; Jeremiah 25:31. Jeremiah 48:45, שָׁאוֹן בְּנֵי “the sons of noise,” i.e. tumultuous soldiers.

(2) devastation, destruction. Psalms 40:3, בּוֹר שָׁאוֹן “the pit of destruction;” Jeremiah 46:17.
