צִפּוֹר , pl. צִפֳּרִים (as if from צִפֹּרֶת), comm. (f. Proverbs 27:8; Isaiah 31:5)
(1) a small bird, so called from its twittering (see צָפַר No. 3 ), Psalms 11:1, 104:17 124:7 Job 40:29 Proverbs 6:5, 7:23 specially a sparrow (Arab. عَصْفُورُ with a prefixed guttural), Psalms 84:4; Proverbs 26:2.
(2) a bird, of any kind, Deuteronomy 4:17, 14:11 Leviticus 14:4. Collect. birds, Genesis 7:14, 15:10.
(3) [Zippor], pr.n. of the father of Balak, king of Moab, Numbers 4:10; Joshua 24:9.
