Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

מָתְנַיִם dual. the loins, the lower part of the back (so called from the idea of strength; see the root מָתַן ), Greek ὀσφύς, which was bound round with the girdle, 2 Kings 4:29, 9:1 Isaiah 20:2; Jeremiah 1:17; Genesis 37:34, on which burdens were sustained, Psalms 66:11 the seat of pain in parturient women, Isaiah 21:3; Nahum 2:11 also the seat of strength (see the orig.; comp. Latin elumbis, delumbare for debilitate); hence מָחַץ מָתְנֵי פ׳ “to crush any one’s loins,” i.e. to crush him wholly, Deuteronomy 33:11 compare Ezekiel 21:11 tottering loins, used of a man nearly falling, Psalms 69:24. Wherein it differs from the word יָרֵךְ thigh, see under that word.

(Arab. مَتْنَانِ and Syr. ܡܰܬܢܳܬܳܐ id. more rarely there is also used the sing. مَتْنُ one side of the loins or lower back, protuberant with flesh and nerves).
