 כַּרְמִיל noun [masculine] crimson, carmine, i.e. crimson stuff, cloth; late (probably Persian loan-word, and a derive. from Persian worm, see De ZDuth. Th. 1878,593); — only 2 Chronicles 2:6; 2 Chronicles 2:13; 2 Chronicles 3:14 (in all + אַרְגָּמָן (ו־ָןׅתְּכֵלֶת 2 Chronicles 2:13; 2 Chronicles 3:14 + בּוּץ also ); read perhaps also for כַּדְמֶל Song of Solomon 7:6 ("" אַרְגָּוָן: so Gi, of hair formed spirally, like shell-fish; Gr, of glossy hair).

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

כַּרְמִיל m. crimson, crimson colour, prepared from insects which inhabited in vast numbers a kind of ilex (coccus ilicis, Linn.); also cloth of a crimson colour; in the later Hebrew, i.q. שָׁנִי, which see; in the more ancient, תּוֹלַעַת 2 Chronicles 2:6, 13 2 Chronicles 2:13, 3:14. The Hebrews adopted this word from the Persians; it is from the Pers. كرم kerm; Sanscr. krimi, a worm; and الَ bright red; compare Armen. karmir; Arab. قرمز coccus, worm, قرمزل coccus; Germ. cramoifi, carmefin [Engl. crimson]. In like manner from vermiculus is derived the French vermeil [English vermillion.]
