דּוּר

(1) pr. i.q. Arabic دَارَ to go around, to go in a circle; whence دَوْرُ and دَايَِرةُ a circle, دَأيِرُ round. Kindred roots are דָּהַר, דָּרַר, טוּר, תּוּר; and with a dental changed into a sibilant, זוּר, סוּר, שׁוּר; all of which have the idea of going round, turning oneself, girding, variously applied. Hence דּוּר No. 1, and דּוֹר [also מְדוּרָה].

(2) to remain, to delay, to inhabit (like the Ch. דּוּר), Psalms 84:11, either because the first habitations were of a round form (which is the opinion of Jo. Simonis), or (as I prefer) that the idea of going round and turning oneself was applied to turning aside to lodge (compare גּוּר, אָוָה). In the western languages this may be compared with δηρός, δηρόν, a long time, δηρός χρόνος; Lat. durus, durare; Germ. dauern, anciently duren, turen.

דּוּר Ch. to dwell, to inhabit, Daniel 4:9, 18. Part. דָּארִין, דָּֽיְרִין קרי, Daniel 2:38, 3:31 6:26 whence מְדָר, מְדוֹר, מְדוּרָה, תְּדִירָא.

דּוּר m.

(1)  a circle (Arabic دَوْرُ), Isaiah 29:3, כַּדּוּר “as in a circle,” round about.

(2) a ball, Isaiah 22:18.

(3) a burning pile, a round heap of wood, Ezekiel 24:5 (compare מְדּוּרָה, verse 9).
