1068) tc (גת GT) AC: ? CO: Winepress AB: ?: The pictograph c is a picture of the foot. The t is a picture of a mark. Combined these mean "a foot marked". After the graes are placed in the wine vat, treaders walk in the vat to crush the grapes freeing up the juices. The treaders feet and lower parts of their clothing are stained red, a sign of their occupation (see Isaiah 63:1-3) .

I. גַּת noun feminine wine-press (contracted from *גַּנְתְּ = *יְגַּנְתְּ) — absolute גַּת Judges 6:11 3t.; גִּתּוֺת Nehemiah 13:15; — wine-press, literal חֹבֵט חִטִּים בַגַּת Judges 6:11 beating out wheat in the wine-press, to hide it from Midian; the juice of the grapes was pressed out by treading, דֹּרֵךְ בְּגַ֑ת Isaiah 63:2 (in simile), but also as accusative דֹּרְכִים גִּתּוֺת Nehemiah 13:15; in figure of judgment, ׳גַּת דָּרַךְ אֲדֹנָי לִבְתּוּלַת וגו Lamentations 1:15 a wine-press hath Adonay trodden for the virgin daughter of Judah; also רְדוּ כִּי מָֽלְאָה גַּת Joel 4:13 (רדה only here with גַּת). — On the form and use of wine-press, and Hebrew synonyms, see Smith DB (article wine-press) Benz Archaeology 212f. גַּת (contr. from גֶּנֶת, of the form בֶּנֶת, בַּת, for יְגֶנֶת from the root יָנַן), pl. גִּתּוֹת f. [From נָנַז in Thes.]

(1) a wine-press, or rather the trough in which the grapes were trodden with the feet, whence the juice flowed into a vat (יֶקֶב) placed near, as it was squeezed from the grapes. Joel 4:13. דָּרַךְ גַּת to tread a winepress, Nehemiah 13:15; Lamentations 1:15.

(2) [Gath], pr. name of a city of the Philistines, where Goliath was born. Joshua 13:3; 1 Samuel 6:17, 21:11 1 Kings 2:39, 40 1 Kings 2:40. Hence patron. גִּתִּי. [Gittite].

(3) גַּת חֵפֶר (“wine-press of the well”), [Gathhepher], a town of the tribe of Zebulon (with ה local, גִּתָּה חֵפֶר), Joshua 19:13, celebrated as the birth-place of Jonah the prophet.

(4) גַּת רִמּוֹן (“wine-press of the pomegranate”); [Gath-rimmon], a town of the tribe of Dan, Joshua 19:45. [See Robinson, ii. 421].
