Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

גָּלַל 1 pers. גַּלּוֹתִי, but pl. גָּֽלְלוּ Genesis 29:3, Genesis 29:8, imp. גֹּל, גּוֹל, once גַּל Psalms 119:22, to roll, as stones, Genesis 29:3, Genesis 29:8. Met. followed by מֵעַל to roll off, or away from any one, e. g. reproach, Joshua 5:9; Psalms 119:22 followed by אֶל and עַל to transfer what is rolled away from oneself to another; Psalms 37:5, גּוֹל עַל־יְהֹוָה דַּרְכֶּךָ “roll upon Jehovah thy way,” i.e. commit all thy concerns to God; Proverbs 16:3, גֹּל אֶל־יְהֹוָה מַעֲשֶׂיךָ “commit to Jehovah whatever thou doest.” Ellipt. Psal. 22:9, where the poet [Christ] speaks of his enemies as deriding his confidence in God and saying, גֹּל אֶל־יְהֹוָה יְפַלְּטֵהוּ “let him devolve his matters upon Jehovah, let him deliver him;” so that גֹּל may be taken as the third person of the imperative, or “he devolved” etc., so that גֹּל is the infinitive put for the finite verb.

Note. The genuine power of this root is expressed by the Germ. rollen, which, like this, is also onomatopoetic. It is one very widely extended, imitating the noise of a globe or other round body rolled forward quickly. It is applied therefore in derivatives.

(a) to things that are round, globular, or rolling, as נַּלְגַּל a wheel, also a whirlwind; גָּלִיל a ring, מְגִלָּה a volume, a roll, Rolle, גֻּלְגֹּלֶת skull, גֵּלֶל, a ball of dung, גֹּל, גֻּלָּה a reservoir for oil.

(b) to heavy things, such as would be rolled and not carried, whence גַּל a heap of stones, גִּלּוּלִים trunks, stocks (Kldße), so called from being rolled; גְּלָל a large stone. (Arab. جَلَلُ an important affair.) It is used also

(c) of waves of water rolling themselves onwards, like the German and English quellen, to well, whence גַּל, גַּלִּים Germ. Wellen. From this most fertile monosyllabic stock, have also sprung the tri-literal roots אָנַל, Arab. اجل, עָגַל whence עֲנָלָה a cart, and with a third radical added at the end, גָּלַם to roll up, גְּלֹם. גֹּלֶם Lat. glomus, glom eravit, globus, Klumpen. In the Hebrew language it has also the sister roots גִּיל to go into a circle, and with a palatal turned into a guttural חוּל, חִיל, אוּל, אִיל (which see); also it has a vast number of offsets in the western languages, especially in Greek. Comp. κέλλω, κίλλω (Valck. ad Herod. vii. 155), κυλίω, κυλίνδω (גלם), κόλλοψ, κόλλαβος, κόλλιξ, κύλλος (comp. κοῖλος), κόλλυρα (a round cake, כִּכָּר), and with the palatal rejected or else put at the end, ἴλλω, εἴλω, εἰλέω, εἰλύω, ἴλη, οὖλος, ἴουλος, ἴλιγγος, ἔλιξ and ἑλίσσω etc. Lat. volvo, Lat. med. callus, i.q. French gallet, caillou (גַּל), Germ. Galle, Gölle i.q. Duelle, quellen, wallen, wälzen, onomat. kullern, Swed. kula, and Lower Germ. Kaul (whence Kugel).

When any thing is rolled along on a rough gravelly soil, so as to make a scraping sound, this is expressed by roots made harsh with the canine letter ר; גָּרַל, גָּרַר, כָּרַר the effects of which are not less widely diffused.

Niphal נָגֹל plur. נָגֹלּוּ fut. יִגַּל.

(1) to be rolled, of the waves of water, Amos 5:24.

(2) to be rolled up, used of the heaven; rolled up like a book, Isaiah 34:4.

Poal, to be rolled in blood, i.e. to be stained with blood, Isaiah 9:4.

Hithpoel id., 2 Samuel 20:12. Followed by עַל to roll oneself upon any one, i.e. to rush upon him, Genesis 43:18.

Pilpel גִּלְגַּל i.q. Kal No. 1, to roll, to roll down, Jeremiah 51:25.

Hithpalpel הִתְגַּלְגַּל to roll oneself down, used of an attacking, enemy, Job 30:14.

Hiphil, fut. וַיָּגֶל to roll, to roll down a stone, Genesis 29:10.
