גָּאוֹן const. גְּאוֹן, once pl. גְּאוֹנִים (from the root גָּאָה), Ezekiel 16:56, pr. elevation; hence

(1) sublimity, majesty, of God, Exodus 15:7; Isaiah 2:10, 19, 21 24:14, בִּגְאוֹן יְיָ עָֽהֲלוּ “they sing with joy of the majesty of Jehovah.” Job 37:4, קוֹל גְּאוֹנוֹ “his sublime voice,” thunder. Job 40:10, עֲדֵה־נָא גָּאוֹן וָגֹבַהּ “deck thyself, now, with majesty and magnificence.” Micah 5:3.

(2) ornament, glory, splendour, Isaiah 4:2, 60:15, “I will make thee גְּאוֹן עוֹלָם a perpetual glory.” Isaiah 13:19, תִּפְאֶרֶת גְּאוֹן כַּשְׂדִּים “the splendid glory of the Chaldeans,” said of the city of Babylon. Isaiah 14:11. Psalms 47:5, גְּאוֹן יַעֲקֹב “the glory of Jacob,” i.e. the Holy Land; also, God himself, Amos 8:7. גְּאוֹן הַיַּרְדֵּן “the glory of Jordan,” poet. used of its green and shady banks, beautifully clothed with willows, tamarisks, and cane, where lions used to lie hid amongst the reeds, Jeremiah 12:5, 49:19 50:44 Zechariah 11:3 comp. (3) i.q. גַּאֲוָה No. 3, pride, arrogance. Proverbs 16:18, “pride goeth before a fall.” גְּאוֹן יַעֲקֹב “the pride of Jacob,” Amos 6:8; Nahum 2:3; Job 35:12; Isaiah 13:11, 16:6. It is also ascribed to the waves, Job 38:11. Compare גֵּאוּת No. 4.
