Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בַּקָּשָׁה (with Kam. impure), a petition, Esther 5:3,, Ezra 7:6.

I. בַּר with suff. בְּרִי a son, so called from the idea of begetting (see the root בָּרָא No. 3 ), a word of frequent use in Chaldee, in Hebrew Poetically. It occurs twice, Proverbs 31:2; Psalms 2:12, נַשְּׁקוּ בַר “kiss the son;” sc. of Jehovah, i.e. the king [namely Christ]. Comp. Psalms 2:7 and בֵּן Isaiah 9:5. Others take בַּר h. l. in the signification of pure and chosen (see בַּר under the root בָּרַר ), and consider the king to be saluted by the name of chosen (בְּחִיר יְהֹוָה) or pure; which is not very suitable.

II. בַּר f. בָּרָה adj. (from the root בָּרַר)

(1) chosen, beloved. Song of Solomon 6:9, בָּרָה הִיא לְיוֹלַדְתָּהּ “most beloved to her mother,” her mother’s darling.

(2) clear, pure. In the praises of the maiden, Song of Solomon 6:10, “fair as the moon, בָּרָה כַּחַמָּה pure and bright as the sun.” Metaph. used in a moral sense, בַּר לֵבָב “he who is pure of heart;” Psalms 24:4, 73:1. See the root No. 3, b.

(3) empty, used of a barn [or stall], Proverbs 14:4.

III. בַּר Amos 5:11, 8:6 Psalms 72:16, elsewhere בַּר subst. m.

(1) corn, pr. cleaned from chaff (compare Jeremiah 4:11), such as is laid up in the barn and is sold, Genesis 41:35, 49 Genesis 41:49; Proverbs 11:26; Joel 2:24 once used of grain growing in the fields, Ps. 65:14. (Arab. بُرُّ wheat; to this also answers the Lat. far, whence farina).

(2) field, country, Job 39:4. See Ch. No. II.

I. בַּר m. Ch. with suff. בְּרֵהּ Daniel 5:22. Pl. בְּנֵי, comp. בֵּן p. 127, B).

(1) a son, Daniel 6:1. בַּר־אֱלָהִין “son of the Gods,” [rather “son of God,”] Daniel 3:25.

(2) grandson, Ezra 5:1.

II. בַּר Ch. emph. בָּרָא m. field, plain, pr. campus purus (Liv.xxiv.14), i.e. void of woods or villages, country, Feld, das Frehe; Daniel 2:38, 4:18, 22, 29. (Arab. بَرُّ, بَِرّيَّةُ plain, desert, Syr. ܒܰܪܐܳ id.).
