Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἀφικνέομαι, ἀφικνοῦμαι: 2 aorist ἀφικομην; (ἱκνέομαι to come); very often in Greek writings from Homer down; "to come from (ἀπό) a place (but often the preposition has almost lost its force); to come to, arrive at"; in the N. T. once, tropically: Romans 16:19 (ὑμῶν ὑπακοή εἰς πάντας ἀφίκετο your obedience has reached the ears of (A. V. is come abroad unto) all men; Sir. 47:16 εἰς νήσους ἀφίκετο τό ὄνομα σου. Josephus, Antiquities 19, 1, 16 εἰς τό θέατρον ... ἀφίκετο λόγος).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

BGU II. 614.20 (A.D. 217) εἰς τοὺς τόπο [υς ] ἀφι [κέσθαι . ., and 1. .27; P Giss I. 34.7 (A.D. 265–6) εἴστω μέντοι , ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἀφίκηται σὺν τῇ [ . . . Α προσκύνημα from El-Kab in Egypt, Preisigke 158, has Ἀνδρόμαχος Μακεδὼν ἀφίκετο πρὸς Ἀμενώθην χρηστὸν θεόν —he records his immediate cure : so ib. 1049 (Abydos) Πειθαγόρας Πειθαγόρου ὅτ᾽ ἀφίκετο ἐπὶ σωτηρίαι , ib. 1052, al. It is almost a technical word in describing these ";pilgrimages"; to sacred places. So in verse, Kaibel 981.9, from the island of Philae (i/A.D.) : —

Νῆσον ἔ [π ]. Αἰγύπτ [ο ]ιο πέρας , περικαλλέα , σεμνήν

Ἴσιδος , Αἰθιόπων πρόσθεν , ἀφιξάμενοι

εἴδομεν ἐν Νείλωι ποταμῶι νέας ὠκυπορούσας .

In ordinary use it is hardly known, and in NT it only appears metaphorically, in Romans 16:19. In Preisigke 1052 (Abydos) Κλεαίνετος ἐπὶ σωτηρίαι Ῥόδων ἀφίκετο , it seems as if the meaning is ";arrived from Rhodes,"; involving a reanimation of the ἀπό in a new sense (instead of the perfectivizing force) : cf. the problem of ἄφιξις below.
