1. witless, Hp. Fract. 31: Comp., Hdt. 3.81, E. Or. 493, Th. 1.142; φρὴν ἀ. Ar. Av. 456; τί τάδ' ἀσύνετα; what folly is this? E. Hel. 352 (lyr.). Adv. -τως Plu. 2.141b.

2. c. gen., not able to understand, λόγου Heraclit. 1, cf. Plu. 2.713b, Jul. Or. 7.218b.

II not to be understood, unintelligible, E. Ion 1205, Ph. 1731. Adv. -τως Hipparch. 1.8.11.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἀσύνετος, ἀσύνετον, unintelligent, without understanding: Matthew 15:16; Mark 7:18; stupid: Romans 1:21; Romans 10:19. In imitation of the Hebrew נָבָל, ungodly (Wis. 1:5; Sir. 15:7f (cf. ἀσυνέτειν, Psalm 118:158 ())), because a wicked man has no mind for the things which make for salvation: Romans 1:31 (others adhere here to the Greek usage; cf. Fritzsche at the passage). (In Greek writings from Herodotus down.) (Cf. σοφός, at the end).

P Oxy III. 471.89 (ii/A.D.), ἦν δὲ οὐκ ἀσύνετον , ";and he was not stupid."; Kaibel 225.3 (near Ephesus) ἀξυνέτων δὲ βουλαῖς ἀνθρώπων τοῦδε ἔτυχον θανάτου : it seems clear that ";foolish"; here does not primarily denote lack of brains but moral obliquity.
