I speak one's opinion plainly, Luc. Zeux. 1; utter an apophthegm, Plu. 2.405e, Iamb. VP 11.55; χρησμόν Luc. Alex. 25, cf. D.S. 16.27, Vett.Val. 73.24: metaph. of vessels when struck, ring, σαπρὸν ἀ. Luc. Par. 4.

ἀποφθέγγομαι; 1 aorist ἀπεφθεγξαμην; to speak out, speak forth, pronounce, not a word of everyday speech, but one "belonging to dignified and elevated discourse, like the Latinprofari,pronuntiare; properly it has the force of to utter or declare oneself, give one's opinion (einen Ausspruch thun), and is used not only of prophets (see Kypke on Acts 2:4 — adding from the Sept. Ezekiel 13:9; Micah 5:12; 1 Chronicles 25:1), but also of wise men and philosophers (Diag. Laërtius 1, 63; 73; 79; whose pointed sayings the Greeks call ἀποφθέγματα, Cicero, off. 1, 29)"; (see φθέγγομαι). Accordingly, "it is used of the utterances of the Christians, and especially Peter, on that illustrious day of Pentecost after they had been fired by the Holy Spirit, Acts 2:4, 14; and also of the disclosures made by Paul to (before) king Agrippa concerning the ἀποκάλυψις κυρίου that had been given him, Acts 26:25." Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἀποφθέγγομαι occurs thrice in Vettius Valens, where the editor renders vaticinari : p. 73.24 ἐν ἱεροῖς κάτοχοι γίνονται ἀποφθεγγόμενοι ἢ καὶ τῇ διανοίᾳ παραπίπτοντες, 112.15 ἀποφθεγγομένους ἢ μανιώδεις ἢ προγνωστικοὺς ἀποτελοῦσιν, and 113.1 μανιώδεις ἐκστατικοὺς πτωματικοὺς ἀποφθεγγομένους ἀπεργάζονται —he refers to Manetho i. 237. This is an extension in malam partem of the mantic note which Winer (ap. Grimm–Thayer) finds in the verb.
