ἀποδέχομαι, Ion. ἀποδεσμ-δέκομαι, fut. -δέξομαι: aor. -εδεξάμην: pf. -δέδεγμαι (for possible pass. usages of this tense v. ἀποδείκνυμι A. 11.3):

I

1. accept, καὶ οὐκ ἀπεδέξατ' ἄποινα Il. 1.95, cf. Ar. Ec. 712, X. An. 6.1.24, etc.; ἀ. γνώμην παρά τινος accept advice from him, Hdt. 4.97; ἀπόδεξαί μου ὂ λέγω Pl. Cra. 430d.

2. accept as a teacher, follow, X. Mem. 4.1.1,etc.; ἀ. τινὰ σύμβουλον Pl. Prt. 323c.

3. admit to one's presence, τοὺς πρεσβευτάς Plb. 21.35.5; ἀ. αὐτὸν καὶ τὰ ῥηθέντα φιλοφρόνως 21.22.1, cf. 3.66.8.

4. mostly of admitting into the mind, receive favourably, approve, ἀπολογίαν Antipho 3.2.2; κατηγορίας, διαβολάς, Th. 3.3, 6.29; τοῖσι μὴ ἀποδεκομένοισι, c. acc. inf., those who do not accept the story that.., Hdt. 6.43; freq. in Pl., δοῦναί τε καὶ ἀ. λόγον R. 531e; τὴν ἀπόκρισιν Prt. 329b; λόγον παρά τινος Smp. 194d, etc.; τι παρά τινος Ti. 29e; τί τινος Th. 1.44, 7.48, Pl. ἀποδέχομαι; deponent middle; imperfect ἀπεδεχομην; 1 aorist ἀπεδεξαμην; 1 aorist passive ἀπεδεχθην; common in Greek writings, especially the Attic, from Homer down; in the N. T. used only by Luke; to accept what is offered from without (ἀπό, cf. Latinex cipio), to accept from, receive: τινα, simply, to give one access to oneself, Luke 9:11 L T Tr WH; Acts 28:30; with emphasis (cf. Tobit 7:17 and Fritzsche at the passage), to receive with joy, Luke 8:40; to receive to hospitality, Acts 21:17 L T Tr WH; to grant one access to oneself in the capacity in which he wishes to be regarded, e. g. as the messenger of others, Acts 15:4 (L T Tr WH παρεδέχθησαν); as a Christian, Acts 18:27; metaphorically, τί, to receive into the mind with assent: to approve, Acts 24:3; to believe, τόν λόγον, Acts 2:41; (so in Greek writings especially Plato; cf. Ast, Lex. Plato, i., p. 232).

P Oxy VI. 939.10 ff. (iv/A.D.), a letter from a Christian dependent to his master regarding the illness of his mistress, has the following : συνγνώμην δέ, κύριέ μου, σχοίης μοι [καὶ εὔνους ] ἀποδέχει με εἰ κ ̣α ̣ὶ ἐς τηλικαύτην σε [ἀγωνία ]ν ἄκων ἐνέβαλον γράψας περὶ αὐτῆς ὅσα [ἐκομίσω ], ";please pardon me, my lord, and receive me kindly, though I unwillingly caused you so much anxiety by writing to you the messages which you received"; (Edd.). Syll 693.61 (iii/B.C.) ἐμφανίζειν δὲ αὐτοῖς ὅτι καὶ νῦν πρῶτοι τὸν ἀγῶνα ταῖς Μούσαις στεφα [νί ]την ἀποδέχοντ [αι. . ., ib. 790.41 (i/B.C.) ἁγνεύοντες καὶ νήφοντες καὶ ἀποδεχόμενοι τὰ πινάκια παρὰ τῶν μαντευομένων. OGIS 692.1 (Egypt) οὐκ ἀπεδεξάμην σε τ (ῆς) [ν λόγοις ] τριβῆς [ἕνεκεν ]. Vettius Valens p. 250.22 τινὲς μὲν εὐχερεῖς καὶ ἐπακτικοὶ τῆς ἀληθείας ἀποδέχονται, which Kroll renders ";laudantur,"; comparing p. 329.16 ὅθεν ἀποδεκτέος ὁ τοιοῦτος. Gildersleeve (Just. M. p. 239) remarks on the ";respectful"; tone of the verb in Acts 24:3 πάντη τε καὶ πανταχοῦ ἀποδεχόμεθα. It survives in MGr.
