turn round about or back, ἵππους Il. 5.581, cf. 505; πάλιν ὑ. βίοτον εἰς Ἅιδαν E. HF 736 (lyr.); ὁ κισσὸς.. Βακχίαν ὑποστρέφων ἅμιλλαν bringing back the Bacchic struggle, i. e. the swift and eager dance, S. Tr. 220 (lyr., s. v.l.).

2. roll up, Arist. Pr. 895b10 (Pass.).

3. Pass., revolve beneath, τινι Arat. 73: c. acc., Id. 512 (better γαῖαν ὕπο ς.).

II intr., turn about, esp. of persons flying or retreating, Il. 12.71, Hdt. 7.211, 9.14, Th. 3.24; φύγαδ' αὖτις ὑ. Il. 11.446; δεῦρ' ὑ. πάλιν E. Alc. 1019; τοὔμπαλιν ὑ. X.
