2. τὰ μακρὰ τ., at Athens, lines of wall connecting the city-wall (ὁ περίβολος) and the harbours, Th. 2.13; they were called respectively τὸ βόρειον or Peiraic, and τὸ νότιον or Phaleric wall (Pl. R. 439e, Aeschin. 2.173, 174), cf. σκέλος 11: an intermediate wall (τὸ διὰ μέσου τ. Pl. Grg. 455e) ran parallel to the northern, which was therefore called also τὸ ἔξωθεν, Th. 2.13: the quarter inside the walls is sts. called τὸ μακρὸν τ. Long Wall, And. 1.45.

II fortification, castle, fort, Pi. Fr. 213, Hdt. 3.14, 91, etc. III walled, fortified town or city, Id. 9.41, 115, X. Cyr. 7.5.13, etc. wall of a temple, PEleph. 20.52 (iii B.C.); of a house, PHamb. 15.8 (iii A.D.), PStrassb. 9.8 (iv A.D.), etc. (Cf. Skt. dehmi 'anoint, smear, plaster', Goth. digan 'mould, create (= πλάσσω)', daigs 'dough', Lat. fingo, figura, Osc. feihúss 'walls', etc.)

τεῖχος, τείχους, τό (cf. θιγγάνω; allied with it are English 'dike' and 'ditch'), from Homer down, the Sept. very frequent for חומָה, 'wall'; the wall round a city, town-wall: Acts 9:25; 2 Corinthians 11:33; Hebrews 11:30; Revelation 21:12, 14f, 17-19.

";rough."; For this adj., confined in the NT to Luke 3:5 LXX, Acts 27:29, cf. the medical prescription, P Tebt II. 273 (ii/iii A.D.), which is headed—πρὸς τὰ τρ [α ]χ ̣ε ̣α βλέφα [ρ ]α (see the introd.). Other exx. are PSI V. 535.20 (iii/B.C.) σπόγγοι ̣ τ ̣ραχεῖς, P Cairo Zen I. 59083.3 (B.C. 257) χῆμαι λεῖαι καὶ τραχεῖ [αι, ";smooth and rough cockles,"; and Syll. 540 (= .3972).7 (B.C. 175–172) ξοΐδος. . . τραχείας. The adj. is applied to a person in Vett. Val. p. 104.11, τραχεῖα μήτηρ.
