2. Pass., become or be clever or skilled in a thing, c. gen. rei, ναυτιλίης σεσοφισμένος skilled in seamanship, Hes. Op. 649; Μοίσαι σεσοφισμέναι Ibyc. Oxy. 1790.23; so ἐν τοῖς ὀνόμασι ς . X. 1. to make wise, teach: τινα, 2 Timothy 3:15 (Psalm 18:8 (); ἐσόφισάς με τήν ἐντολήν σου, Psalm 118:98 (); οὔτε τί ναυτιλιης σεσοφισμενος, οὔτε τί νηῶν, Hesiod, Works, 647).

2. Middle in Greek writings from Herodotus down, mostly as a deponent, to become wise, to have understanding (ἐσοφίσατο ὑπέρ πάντας ἀντρωπους, 1 Kings 4:27(31); add, Ecclesiastes 2:15, etc.; frequent in Sir.); to invent, play the sophist; to devise cleverly or cunningly: perfect passive participle σεσοφίσμενοι μυθοι, 2 Peter 1:16. to make wise, instruct: c. acc pers., 2 Timothy 3:15 (cf. Psalms 19:8 (Psalms 119:98). As depon., -ομαι ;

(a) intrans., to become wise (1 Kings 4:27 (1 Kings 5:11), Ecclesiastes 2:15, and freq. in Sirach 7:5, al.);

(b) trans., to invent, devise cleverly: pass., 2 Peter 1:16

A.D. 200) συνκα [λέσας συμβούλειον (?) . . . . . . . . . ], and P Lond V. 1711.53 (A.D. 566–573) a marriage contract in which along with other interesting conditions a husband promises his wife not to introduce any unsuitable person into the house—προσομολογῶ ἐγὼ ὁ σὸς γαμέτης μὴ συγκαλ ̣έσαι τινὰ ἀνακόλουθον κατ᾽ οἶκο ̣ν ̣ ἐπὶ σέ.
