παιδάριον , -ου , τό ,

dimin. of παῖς ,

[in LXX chiefly for H5288;]

a little boy, a lad (in late and colloq. Gk. the word seems to be used with greater latitude and even to lose its dimin. force entirely; cf. Tobit 6:2-3, and v. MM, xviii): John 6:9.†

SYN.: see παῖς G3816.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For παρατίθημι in its literal sense ";place beside,"; ";set before,"; as in Mark 6:41 al., cf. P Oxy II. 326 (c. A.D. 45) π ]αρατέθεικα τῆι μητρὶ Φιλου [μέν ]ηι τὸ βροχίον τοῦ μέλανος (";the ink pot";). A literary ex. is afforded by Menander Fragm. 146 p. 43—

ὡς ἀμυγδαλὰς

ἐγὼ παρέθηκα,

";when I had set almonds before you."; From this the transition is easy to ";submit,"; ";report,"; ";bring forward by way of proof"; (cf. Acts 17:8), e.g. P Tor I. 1ii. 28 (B.C. 116) ὧν καὶ παραθήσομαι ἀντίγραφα ἐπὶ τῆς καταστάσεως, P Oxy I. 33 versoiii. 12 (interview with an Emperor—late ii/A.D.) ὁ ἠβό [κατο ]ς εὐθὺς δρ ̣α ̣μὼν παρέθετο [τῷ ] κυρίῳ, ";the veteran straightway ran and reported it to his lord,"; P Tebt II. 287.10 (A.D. 161–9) ἐνέτ [υ ]χον τῷ στρατηγῷ π [α ]ρατιθέμενοι. . . ";they petitioned the strategus adding a statement . . .,"; ib. 291.32 (A.D. 162) ταῦ ]τ ̣᾽ ἐστὶν τὰ π ̣[ερ ]ι ̣̣ τοῦ γένους παρατεθέντα, ";this is the evidence submitted concerning parentage"; (Edd.), ib. 318.24 (A.D. 166) ἀκ [ο ]λούθως οἶς παρεθ [ ]μην ἀντ [ιγρ ]α ̣[φοις, ";in accordance with the copies of the deeds submitted by me"; (Edd.), PSI V. 447.16 (A.D. 167) ἅ τε παρέθοντο (cf. Blass-Debrunner, § 94. 1) δικαιώματα τῷ [πρ ]ογεγρα (μμένῳ) Ἰουλίῳ, and P Thead 15.6 (A.D. 280–281) τὴν δὲ βίαν πολλάκις παρεθέμεθα διὰ τῶν σῶν ὑπομνημάτων, where Jouguet (see his note ad l.) finds the meaning to be, ";nous avons fait plusieurs fois consigner, à toutes fins utiles, le récit de ces actes dans ton journal."; The subscription of Chrest. I. 26.35 (A.D. 156), for which Wilcken can find no exact parallel, runs—εἴ τινα δίκαια ἔχεις, τῷ στρατηγῷ παραθοῦ καὶ τὰ δέοντα ποιήσει.

The verb is common in connexion with the declaration and registration of claims on property, as when in P Oxy IV. 713 (A.D. 97) a claim of ownership addressed to the keepers of the records is headed—παρετέθ (η), ";inserted in the register"; : cf. ib. II. 237viii. 34 (A.D. 186) παρατιθέτωσαν δὲ καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες τ ̣α ̣ι ̣̑ς ὑποστάσεσι τῶν ἀνδρῶν, ";wives shall also insert copies in the property-statements of their husbands"; (Edd.). For the mid. = ";pledge,"; ";deposit with another,"; see CPR I. 12.3 (A.D. 93) παρεθέμην σοι ἐνέχυρα περονείδων (";buckles"; ?) ζεῦγος, and the corresponding use of the subst. in P Oxy III. 533.9 (ii/iii A.D.) αἱ πρόσοδοί μου. . . παρὰ τῷ ταμείῳ ἐ [ν π ]αραθέσει λογισθήτωσαν, and P Gen I. 44.24 (A.D. 260) δι ̣α ̣̣ τῆς παραθέσεως τῶν δραχμῶν.

Hence the thought of ";commend"; a person to the care of another, as in P Oxy XIV. 1663.8 (a letter of recommendation—ii/iii A.D.) Σωτῆρα. . . παρατίθεμαί σοι, and PSI I. 96.2 (v/A.D.) παραθέσθαι α [ὐτὸ ]ν ̣ τοῖς πρωτοκ ̣(ωμήταις ?) : cf. Acts 14:23; Acts 20:32, also Psa. 30꞉6 [MT Psalms 31:5] Luke 23:46).
