Thayer's Expanded Definition

μέμφομαι; 1 aorist ἐμεμψαμην; in classical Greek from Hesiod (Works, 184) down; to blame, find fault: absolutely, Romans 9:19; the thing found fault with being evident from what precedes, Mark 7:2 Rec.; αὐτούς, Hebrews 8:8 L T Tr marginal reading WH text, where R G Tr text WH marginal reading αὐτοῖς, which many join with μεμφόμενος (for the person or thing blamed is added by Greek writings now in the dative, now in the accusative; see Passow (or Liddell and Scott), under the word, cf. Krüger, § 46, 7, 3); but it is more correct to supply αὐτήν, i. e. διαθήκην, which the writer wishes to prove was not faultless (cf. 7), and to join αὐτοῖς with λέγει; (Buttmann, § 133, 9).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The phrase εἰς τὸ ἐν μηδενὶ μεμφθῆναι is common, e.g. BGU I. 18.16 (A.D. 169), P Oxy I. 82.7 (mid. iii/A.D.), ib. XII. 1426.16 (A.D. 332), and PSI I. 86.13 (A.D. 367–375). For the acc. constr., as in Hebrews 8:8 א* AD* (but dat. אc B), cf. P Fay 111.3 (A.D. 95–6) μένφομαί σαι (l. μέμφομαί σε) μεγάλως ἀπολέσας χ [υ ]ρίδια δύω, ";I blame you greatly for the loss of two pigs,"; P Oxy XII. 1481.5 (early ii/A.D.) μέμφομαι δὲ τὸν εἴπαντά σοι, ";I blame the person who told you,"; P Ryll II. 239.13 (mid. iii/A.D.) ἐὰν δέ τις ἀμ [ ]λεια γένηται, οὐκ ἐμ ̣[ὲ ο ]υ ̣͂̔ν μέμψι ἀ ̣λ ̣λ ̣[ὰ σεαυτόν, ";if any neglect occurs, you will not blame me but yourself"; (Edd.). For μεμπτός cf. BGU IV. 1079.32 (A.D. 41) (= Selections, p. 40) ἐὰν τὰ παρ () σατοῦ ποίσῃς (l. σαυτοῦ ποιήσῃς) οὐκ εἶ μεμπτός, ";if you manage your own affairs, you are not to be blamed,"; P Oxy XIV. 1772.5 (late iii/A.D.) ἐγὼ δὲ οὔκ εἰμι μεμπτός, ἀλλὰ σὺ. . . In P Amh II. 63.5 (iii/A.D.) συνκαταθέμενος βραδέως μεμφητά, the editors suggest that μεμφητά, which does not occur elsewhere, may = μεμπτά, and that the meaning is that the person referred to had taken a long time in producing an unsatisfactory result. Reference may be made to the striking tomb-inscr. Kaibel 574.7 f. (end of i/A.D.)–

εἰ δὲ τριήκοντα ζωῆς μόνον ἔσχ᾽ ἐνιαυτούς

καὶ δύο, τῷ φθονερῷ δαίμονι μεμφόμεθα.

The noun μέμψις is seen in such passages as P Oxy X. 1255.19 (A.D. 292) εἰς τὸ μηδεμίαν μέμψιν ἐπακολουθῆσαι, ";so that no complaint may ensue"; (Edd.), ib. I. 140.16 (A.D. 550) εἰς τὸ μηδεμ ̣ίαν μέμψιν ἢ ἀμελίαν ἢ κατάγνωσίν τινα περὶ ἐμὲ γενέσθαι.
