Vocabulary of the Greek NT

καθάπερ is very common in the legal phrase καθάπερ ἐκ δίκης. Thus our earliest Greek marriage contract, P Eleph 1.12 (B.C. 311–0) (= Selections, p. 3), concludes—ἡ δὲ πρᾶξις ἔστω καθάπερ ἐγ δίκης, ";and let the right of execution be as if a formal decree of the Court had been obtained"; : cf. P Amh II. 46.13 (ii/B.C.), P Fay 22.14 (i/A.D.), ib. 91.33 (A.D. 99), etc. Other exx. of the word are P Hib I. 49.6 (c. B.C. 257) ε [ἶπ ]ον δὲ αὐτῶι καθάπερ ἔγραψα [α ]υ ̣̓τῶι ὅπως ἂν ἐμβάλητσι τὰς ἐλαίας εἰς βίκους, ";tell him that, as I wrote to him, he is to put the olives into jars"; (Edd.), P Eleph 121 (B.C. 223–2) καθάπερ ὤιου δεῖν, ";nach deinem Antrag,"; P Vat A.10 (B.C. 168) (= Witkowski EPP..2, p. 65) ἠβουλόμην δὲ καὶ σὲ παραγεγονέναι εἰς τὴν πόλ [ι ]ν, καθάπερ καὶ Κόνων καὶ οἱ ἄλλοι οἱ ἀπειλη [μμένοι ] π [ ]ντες, [πως ] καὶ κτλ. In the decrees τὰ μὲν ἄλλα καθάπερ ὁ δεῖνα. ";was the usual introduction to an amendment proposed in the Ecclesia to a probouleuma,"; e.g. CIG 84.6 f. Κέφαλος εἶπε · τὰ μὲν ἄλλα καθάπερ τῇ βουλεῖ · ἀναγράψαι δὲ. . . : see Roberts-Gardner, p. 18, and cf. Milligan Thess. p. 25.
