Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἱερατεία (-τία) of the actual service of a priest (Luke 1:9, Hebrews 7:5) as distinguished from the more abstract ἱερωσύνη (Hebrews 7:11 al.) may be illustrated from Priene139.7 (before B.C. 335) περὶ τῆς δίκης τῆς γενομένης περὶ τῆς ἱερατείης τοῦ Διός. The distinction, however, frequently disappears : cf. e.g. P Tebt II. 298.14 (A.D. 107–8) where certain priests pay 52 drachmae ὑπὲρ. . . . [τὴν ] ἱερατείαν αὐτοῦ, ";and that his priesthood shall be entered upon all formal documents"; (Mahaffy). See further s.v.

The adj. ἱερατικός is used of ";priestly"; descent in P Tebt II. 293.13 (c. A.D. 187) ]πιζητοῦντί σοι εἰ ἔστιν ἱ [ερα ]τικοῦ [γέ ]νους, and in ib. 291.48 (A.D. 162) where a priest claims to be γένους ἱερατικ [ο ] on the ground of his knowledge of hieratic and Egyptian writing .41 ff.
