Vocabulary of the Greek NT

With this Aramaic form of the Heb. ἐλωί as read by DE al. in Matthew 27:46, cf. the opening words of the imprecatory tablet Wünsch AF 2.1 (ii/iii A.D.)—Ἰάω Ἦλ Μιχαὴλ Νέφθω. The editor quotes from the Etym. Magnum, p. 477, 4 τὸ ἢλ ὃ σημαίνει τὸν θεόν, and refers to a passage from Philo Byblius (Fragm. Historic. Graec. iii. p. 570 fr. 4) in which Κρόνος and Ἦλ are identified—Κρόνος τοίνυν ὃν οἱ Φοίνικες Ἦλ προσαγορεύουσιν. The description of God as אֵל = δύναμις is supported by a striking variation of the cry of Mt l.c. in Ev. Petr. 5—Ἡ δύναμίς μου, ἡ δύναμις, κατέλειψάς με.
