Thayer's Expanded Definition

διαλλάσσω: 2 aorist passive διηλλαγην; (see διά, C. 6);

1. to change: τί ἀντί τίνος (cf. Winer's Grammar, 206 (194)).

2. to change the mind of anyone, to reconcile (so from (Aeschylus) Thucydides down): τινα τίνι. Passive to be reconciled, τίνι, to renew friendship with one: Matthew 5:24; (1 Samuel 29:4; 1 Esdr. 4:31). See Fritzsche's learned discussion of this word in his Commentary on Romans, vol. i., p. 276ff (in opposed to Tittmann's view that it implies mutual enmity; see καταλλάσσω, at the end); cf. Winer's De verb. comp. etc. Part v., pp. 7, 10; (Tholuck, Bergrede Christi, p. 171 (on Matthew 5:24)).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

With Matthew 5:24 may be compared BGU III. 846.10 (ii/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 94) παρακα [λ ]ῶ σαι, μήτηρ, δ [ι ]αλάγητί μοι, and P Giss I. 17.13 (time of Hadrian) ὥστε διαλλάγηθι ἡμεῖν. Belonging perhaps to the same period as this last is the fragmentary letter in P Par p. 422, 4 ἥως ὁ θ ̣εῖος (?) σοὶ διαλλαγῇ. For the subst. = ";reconciliation,"; see BGU II. 665ii. 11 (ii/A.D.). The verb is found = ";change,"; ";exchange,"; OGIS 484.10 (ii/A.D.) τοῖς τὸ δηνάριον διαλλάσσειν βου [λ ]ομένοι [ς. Note also the middle in Michel 1001ii. 14 (Thera, c. B.C. 200), where it is forbidden to sell the μουσεῖον or its precinct or appurtenances, μήτε καταθέμεν, μήτε διαλλάξασθαι, μήτε ἐξαλλοτριῶσαι τρόπωι μηθενί.
