מִצְוָה f. (from the root צָוָה) pl. מִצְוֹת a command, a precept, 2 Kings 18:36 especially used of the precepts of God, Deuteron. 6:1, 25 7:11 of a human teacher, Proverbs 7:1,. The idea of prohibition is found Leviticus 4:13, אַחַת מִכָּל־מִצְוֹת יְהֹוָה אֲשֶׁר לֹא־תֵעָשֶׂינָה “any of the commandments of Jehovah which ought not to be done,” i.e. things prohibited by his precepts. מִצְוַת הַלְּוִיִּים what was due to the Levites, Nehemiah 13:5 comp. מִשְׁפָּט.
