[Babel], Babylon, a very ancient and celebrated city of Asia, the metropolis of Babylonia, Genesis 10:10; 2 Kings 17:24, 20:12, seq.; Micah 4:10, etc., situated in Lat. 32°, 32´, on both banks of the Euphrates; its ruins still exist in the neighbourhood of the city of Hella (حاّة), and they have been of late accurately and learnedly described. See Herod. i. 178, 183. Strabo, xvi. 1, § 6. Ker Porter, Travels, ii. p. 283, seq. Heeren, Hist. Werke, xi. 158, seq. Germ. Encycl. v. Babylon. The name of the city was applied to the province of Babylonia, Psalms 87:4, 137:1 Isaiah 14:4, whence there is often mentioned מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל “the king of Babylonia;” a name also given to the kings of Persia, as to Cyrus, Ezra 5:13 to Artaxerxes, Nehemiah 13:6 compare אַשּׁוּר.
