Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אַשְׁקְלוֹן (perhaps “migration,” from the root שׁקל, Aram. to migrate; comp. פְּלֶשֶׁת), pr.n. Ascalon, [Askelon, Ashkelon], a maritime city of the Philistines, Judges 1:18, 14:19 1 Samuel 6:17; 2 Samuel 1:20. Arab. عسقلان [’Askŭlân], which name is still retained by the little village standing in the ruins of the ancient city. The Gent. noun is אַשְׁקְלוֹנִי [Eshkalonites], Joshua 13:3.
