שִׁמְשׁוֹן (“solar,” “like the sun”), Samson, pr.n. of a judge of Israel, celebrated for his great strength, Judges 13:24, seqq. LXX. Σαμψών, which Josephus (Antiqu. v. 10 ) explains ἰσχυρός, contrary to the etymology (see Gesch. der Heb. Spr. page 81, 82).
