Anakims = “long-necked”
1) a tribe of giants, descendants of Anak, which dwelled in southern Canaan

עֲנָק m.
(1) a collar, neckchain, necklace, Song of Solomon 4:9 pl. ־ִים and וֹת Proverbs 1:9; Judges 8:26.
(2) i.q. Arab. عَنَقُ length of neck and stature (compare أَعْنَقُ long-necked); hence בְּנֵי עֲנָק, בְּנֵּי הָעֲנָק Numbers 13:33 יְלִידֵי הָעֲנָק ibid. verses 22, 28; also עֲנָקִים Deuteronomy 1:28, 2:10, 11, 21, and בְּנֵי עֲנָקִים Deuteronomy 9:2. The Anakim (prop. men with long necks, of high stature), pr.n. of a Canaanite nation, famous on account of their height, who inhabited Hebron previous to the Hebrews taking possession of the land (Joshua 11:21); they were almost utterly extirpated by them, but a few remained in the cities of the Philistines (compare the interpreters and critics on Jeremiah 47:5).
