Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עֲלוּקָה f. ἅπαξ, λεγόμ. Proverbs 30:15, pr. a leech, as rightly rendered by the LXX., Vulg., Gr. Venet. (Arab. عَلْقَةُ, Syr. ܥܰܠܩܐܳ id. from the root علق and غلق to adhere); hence used as a female monster or spectre, an insatiable sucker of blood, such as الفول, الفولة in the Arabian superstitions, especially in the Thousand and One Nights, or like the Vampyre of our fables. [Such profane follies must not be looked on as illustrations or explanations of the inspired Scripture; as if the Holy Ghost could sanction such vanities.] So الَعلُوقُ in the Kamûs is rendered by the very word الفولُ, which Bochart (Hieroz. ii. 801) and Alb. Schult. on Prov. loc. cit. have incorrectly interpreted fate. See also my remarks on the superstitions of the Hebrews and other Orientals with regard to spectres, in Comment. on Isaiah 34:14.
