Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

מָחָה [The primary meaning given in Thes. is to stroke, to rub over].

(1)  to wipe, off or away, to wipe. (Arab. ماحا id., kindred in Greek are μάσσω, μέμαχα; μύσσω, ἀπο-ἐπι-; with a prefixed sibilant σμάω, σμύω, σμήχω, σμώχω. The theme μάσσω is yet more nearly approached by מָשַׁשׁ, מָשַׁח). Used e.g. of tears, Isaiah 25:8 the mouth, Proverbs 30:20 something written, Exodus 32:32, 33 Exodus 32:33 compare Numbers 5:23 sin, i.e. to forgive, Psalms 51:3, 11 Psalms 51:11; Isaiah 43:25, 44:22.

(2) to destroy men, Genesis 6:7, 7:4 any one’s name or memory, Exodus 17:14; Deuteronomy 9:14 a city, 2 Kings 21:13 a passage in which the primary power (No. 1) is retained, “I will destroy (prop. wipe off) Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, he wipeth it, and turneth it over.”

Niphal, fut. apoc. יִמַּח Psalms 109:13 (for יִמָּח), pass. of No. 2; to be blotted out, Deuteronomy 25:6; Ezekiel 6:6; Judges 21:17; Proverbs 6:33.

Hiphil, fut. apoc. תֶּמַח i.q. Kal No. 2, to blot out, to destroy, Nehemiah 13:14 Jerem. 18:23. Proverbs 31:3, וּדְרָכֶיךָ לַמְחוֹת מְלָכִין “and (give not) thy ways to destroy kings.” The passage is so rendered by those who suppose that a too warlike spirit is here reprehended. I prefer, to those who corrupt kings, i.e. harlots; nor is there any need for us, in this sense, to read לְמֹחוֹת מְלָכִין, if מָחָה be taken for the fem. of the adjective מָחֶה.

II.

מָחָה i.q. מָחָא to strike upon, followed by עַל to extend to, in a geographical sense, Numbers 34:11. Hence מְתִי. [In Thes. this is joined with the preceding, as also is the following article.]

III.

מָחָה i.q. מָחַח, مَخَّ Conj IV. to be marrowy, whence

Piel, to take out marrow; Arab. Conj. II. and Pual, pass. Isaiah 25:6, שְׁמָנִים מְמֻחָיִם “fatness unmarrowed,” taken out of a marrowy bone, very delicate. מְמֻחָיִם for the common מְמֻחִים; see sing. מְמֻחַי for מְמֻחֶה; comp. מֵרְאֶה; see Heb. Gramm. § 90, 9. [In Thes. this root is not divided into three parts.]
