Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

יָשַׁב fut. יֵשֵׁב, inf. abs. יָשׁוֹב (1 Samuel 20:5), constr שֶׁבֶת, with suff. שִׁבְתִּי, imp. שֵׁב, שְׁבָה.

(1) to sit, to sit down; absol. Genesis 27:19 followed by לְ of place, Psalms 9:5; Proverbs 9:14; Job 2:13 and with a dative pleon. Genesis 21:16, וַתֵּשֶׁב לָהּ “and she sat down.” Also, to be seated, to be sitting, followed by בְּ (Genesis 19:1; 2 Samuel 7:1); עַל (1 Kings 2:19), and poet. also with an acc. of the place on which any one sits. Psalms 80:2, ישֵׁב הַכְּרֻבִים “he who sits upon the cherubim,” i.q. sits on a throne upborne by cherubim. Psalms 99:1; Isaiah 37:16. Psalms 122:5, כִּי שָׁמָּה יָֽשְׁבוּ כִסְאוֹת לְמִשְׁפָּט “for there they (judges) sit on for judging;” commonly, but incorrectly, taken as, there sit, i.e. are placed, thrones; (Aram. יְתִב, ܝܺܬܒܶ id. Arab. verb وثب has the signification of sitting only in the dialect of the Himyarites; see the amusing story in Pococke, in Spec. Hist. Arab. page 15, edit. White; but this sense is found in the substantives وِثَابُ a sitting down, habitations, places, وثاّب a throne, a bed. In the vulgar Arabic the verb is commonly used in the sense of lying in wait, springing on the prey, and leaping in general).

Specially, to sit is used of

(a) judges, where they sit to give judgment, Psalms 9:5 kings sitting on their thrones, Psalms 9:8, 55:20. Hence, Isaiah 10:13, יוֹשְׁבִים “those who sit on (thrones),” i.e. kings.

(b) of those who lie in wait for others, Psal. 10:8 17:12 Job 38:40. Followed by לִ Jeremiah 3:2. Comp. Gr. λόχος, ambush; λοχεύω, λοχίζω, to lie in ambush, from λέγω, to sit down; fich legen, and Arabic وثب, (see above).

(c) of an army, which sits down in a place, and holds possession of it (einen Ort befeßt haben), 1 Samuel 13:16.

(d) of mourners, Isaiah 47:5; Job 2:13. (e) of those who sit down idly, do nothing, are slothful, Isaiah 30:7; Jeremiah 8:14.

(f) To sit with any one, followed by עִם is to associate with him, Psalms 26:4, Psalms 26:5 compare Psal. 1:1, and הָלַךְ עִם, בּוֹא עִם.-As to the phrase, “to sit at the king’s right hand,” see above, page 351, B [and see the note added there].

(2) to remain, abide, Genesis 24:55, 29:19. Followed by an accus. of place, Genesis 25:27, ישֵׁב אֹהָלִים “remaining in the tents,” i.e. staying at home. With a dative pleonast. Genesis 22:5, שְׁבוּ לָכֶם פֹּה “remain here.” Followed by a dat. of pers. to remain for some one, i.q. to expect him, Exodus 24:14. Also used of inanimate things, Genesis 49:24, וַתֵּשֶׁב בְּאֵיתָן קַשְׁתּוֹ “but his bow remained strong.”

(3) to dwell, to dwell in, to inhabit, Genesis 13:6, Genesis 13:7, 12 Genesis 13:12, 19:29 followed by בְּ Deuteronomy 17:14, and עַל of the place or land which one inhabits, Levit. 25:18 also followed by an acc. Genesis 4:20. Poet. Psalms 22:4, יוֹשֵׁב תְּהִלּוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל “dwelling amongst the praises of Israel,” in the temple, where the hymns of Israel from around sound in thy ears. Psalms 107:10. Part. יוֹשֵׁב an inhabitant, a dweller, Genesis 19:25; Judges 1:21, 3:3. But יָשַׁב followed by an accus. is also to dwell near, by anything, to be neighbour (comp. גּוּר). יוֹשְׁבֶיחָ those who dwell near her, sc. the city, Ezekiel 26:17. Genesis 4:20, ישֵׁב אֹחֶל וּמִקְנֶח “those who dwell in tents and amongst flocks.”

(4) pass. to be inhabited, as a place, city, country, Isaiah 13:20; Jeremiah 17:6, 25 Jeremiah 17:25; Ezekiel 26:20. In like manner שָׁכַן and Greek ναίω, ναιετάω, signify both to inhabit and to be inhabited.

Niphal נוֹשַׁב to be inhabited, Exodus 16:35, and often in other places.

Piel יִשֵּׁב to place, to make to sit down, Ezekiel 25:4.
