חָלִיל

(1) subst. m. a pipe, a flute, so called from its being pierced (see the root חָלַל No. 1 ), Isaiah 5:12, 30:29 1 Kings 1:40.

(2) adj. profane (see the root Piel No. 3, b, and Hiphil No. 3), and neut. any thing profane, whence with ה parag. חָלִילָה, חָלִלָה (Milêl) properly, to profane things! ad profana, i.e. absit, far be it! (Talmud. חולין לך), an exclamation of abhorrence. 1 Samuel 20:2, חָלִילָה לֹא חָמוּת “far be it! thou shalt not die;” comp. 1 Samuel 2:30. It is used

(a) חָלִילָה לִי followed by מִן with an inf. “far be it from me that I should (so) do,” Genesis 18:25, 44:7, 17 Genesis 44:17; Joshua 24:16 comp. Job 34:10.

(b) followed by אִם with a future, Job 27:5; 1 Samuel 14:45 (without לִי) 2 Samuel 20:20. To both of these expressions there is sometimes added מֵיהֹוָה 1 Samuel 24:7, 26:11 1 Kings 21:3, with the sense of, to places profaned or accursed by the Lord (see מִן 2, ); or, the primary signification being neglected, a curse be to me from the Lord, if, etc. Joshua 22:29, חָלִילָה לָנוּ מִמֶּנּוּ לִמְרֹד בַּיְהֹוָה “woe be to us from him (i.e. Jehovah), if we should sin against Jehovah.” The idea is a little different, 1 Samuel 20:9, “far be it from thee, (for me) that if I know I tell thee not.” [“In this passage instead of the dat. of the person detesting, there is added a dat. of the person for whose benefit these things are sworn.”]
