חַיִל m. constr. חֵיל, with suff. חֵילִי pl. חֲיָלִים (see חוּל No. 6 ), strength, power, might (especially warlike), valour, Psal. 18:33, 40 Psalms 18:40, 33:16. עָשָׂה חַיִל to shew oneself strong, to display valour, Numbers 24:18 Ps. 60:14 108:14. Hence

(2) forces, a host, Exodus 14:28. שַׂר הַחַיִל leader of the army, 2 Samuel 24:2. בְּנֵי חַיִל, אַנְשֵׁי soldiers, Deuteronomy 3:18; 1 Samuel 14:52; Psalms 110:3, בְּיוֹם חֵילֶךָ “in the day of thy warfare,” i.e. of thy warlike expedition; [that is, the day of the sending of the rod of Messiah’s strength out of Zion, when he rules in the midst of his enemies, and strikes through kings in the day of his wrath].

(3) ability, hence wealth, riches, Genesis 34:29; Job 20:15. עָשָׂה חַיִל to acquire wealth; Deuteronomy 8:17, 18 Ruth 4:11; Proverbs 31:29.

חַיִל & חֵל m. properly i.q. חַיִל, especially

(1) an army, a host, 2 Kings 18:17 once חֵל Obadiah 1:20 also Psalms 10:10, according to קרי, where חֵיל־בָּאִים may be rendered the host of the afflicted; but it is preferable to follow כתיב, see חֵילְכָה.

(2) defence, fortification, especially a particular part of the fortifications, namely, a ditch, with the antemurale surrounding it, 2 Samuel 20:15; Isaiah 26:1; Nahum 3:8; Lamentations 2:8 comp. 1 Kings 21:23; Psalms 48:14, 122:7. LXX. προτείχισμα, περίτειχος. Vulg. antemurale. (In the Talmud חיל is used for a space surrounding the wall of the temple, see Lightfoot, Opp. t.ii.p. 193).
