Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָיַי i.q. חָיָה to live, but with the middle radical doubled, like the Arab. حَىَّ. To this belongs 3 Pret. חַי, Genesis 5:5, כָּל־יְמֵי אָדָם אֲשֶׁר־חַי “all the days of Adam which he lived;” 3:22, וְאָכַל וָחַי לְעוֹלָם “(lest) he should eat and live for ever;” Numbers 21:8. Care is necessary not to refer to the verb the occurrences in which חַי is an adjective, as הֲעוֹד אֲבִיכֶם חַי “is your father yet alive?” Genesis 43:7. Hence חַי, חַיָּח, חַיּוּת.
