Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָדֵל fut. יֶחְדַּל.

(1) to leave off, to cease, to desist. (Arab. خذل id.; also, to forsake, to leave, see Scheid on the Song of Hezekiah, page 53; Schultens on Job, page 72. The primary idea lies in becoming loose, flaccid, which is referred to slackening from labour. It belongs to the family of roots cited at the word דָּלַל, which have the meaning of being pendulous and flaccid.)

Constr.

(a) with a gerund following, Genesis 11:8, וַיַּחְדְּלוּ לִבְנוֹת הָעִיד “and they left off to build the city.” Genesis 41:49; 1 Samuel 12:23; Proverbs 19:27 also poetically with an inf. Isaiah 1:16, חִדְלוּ הָרֵעַ “cease to do evil;” and with a verbal noun, Job 3:17, חָֽדְלוּ רֹגֶז “they cease to trouble.”

(b) absol. to cease (from labour). 1 Samuel 2:5, רְעֵבִים חָדֵלוּ “the hungry have left off (working);” also, to rest, Job 14:6. Judges 5:6, “the highways rested,” were void of travellers.

(c) absol. i.q. to cease to be, to come to an end. Exodus 9:34, “the hail and the thunder ceased;” verse 29, 33 Isaiah 24:8 also, to fail, to be wanting. Deuteronomy 15:11, “the poor shall not fail.” Job 14:7.

(2) to cease or desist from any thing, followed by מִן before an inf. 1 Kings 15:31 hence, to beware of doing anything, Exodus 23:5 [“as to this passage see under עָזַב ”]; to give anything up, 1 Samuel 9:5; Proverbs 23:4 with an acc. Judges 9:9, seq.; also with acc. of pers. to leave, to let alone, Exodus 14:12; Job 7:16, 10:20 and followed by מִן Isaiah 2:22, חִדְלוּ לָבֶם מִן הָאָדָם “cease ye from man,” let man go, let go your vain confidence in men. 2 Chronicles 35:21, תֲדַל לְךָ מֵאֱלֹהִים “forbear from God,” i.e. do not oppose him any more.

(3) to leave something undone, not to do something, to forbear doing something; etwas laffen, unterlaffen. 1 Kings 22:6, 15 1 Kings 22:15, הֲנֵלֵךְאִם נֶחְדָּל “shall we go … or shall we not go?” gehen wir … oder laffen wir es? Ezekiel 2:5; Jeremiah 40:4; Job 16:6; Zechariah 11:12. Followed by a gerund, Numbers 9:13; Deuteronomy 23:23; Psalms 36:4.

[Derivatives, the words immediately following.]
