Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָגַר fut. יַחְגֹּר to gird. [“Cognate roots, Arab.حجر to restrain. Syr. ܚܓܪ to lame.”] Construed variously

(a) with an acc. of the member girded, 2 Kings 4:29, 9:1 also with בְּ before that with which one is girded. So figuratively, Proverbs 31:17, “she girdeth her loins with strength.”

(b) with an acc. of the garment or girdle, e.g. חָגַר אֶת־הַחֶרֶב “he girded (himself with) a sword.” 1 Samuel 17:39, 25:13 Psalms 45:4, חָגַר שַׂק to gird himself with sackcloth, Isaiah 15:3; Jeremiah 49:3. Part. act. 2 Kings 3:21, מִכֹּל חֹגֵר חֲגֹרָה “of all that were girded with a girdle,” i.e. who bare arms. Part. pass. חָגוּר אֵפוֹד 1 Samuel 2:18, girded with an ephod; followed by a gen. Joel 1:8, חֲגוּרַת שַׂק “girded with sackcloth;” sometimes used elliptically Joel 1:13, חִגְרוּ “gird yourselves (with sackcloth).” 2 Samuel 21:16, וְהוּא חָגור חֲדָשָׁה “he being girded with a new (sword).” Metaph. Psalms 65:13, גִּיל גְּבָעוֹת תַּחְגֹּרְנָה “the hills are girded with joy” (compare verse 14 Ps6 5:14). Psalms 76:11 (c) with a double acc. of the person and of the girdle, Exodus 29:9; Leviticus 8:13 and with בְּ of the girdle with which, Leviticus 8:7, 16:4.

(d) absol. to gird oneself, Ezekiel 44:18; 1 Kings 20:11. Here belongs 2 Samuel 22:46, וְיַחְגְּרוּ מִמִּסְגְּרוֹתָם “and they shall gird themselves (and go out) from their fortresses;” unless the Syriac usage be preferred for explaining this passage, “they creep forth from their fortresses,” compare Micah 7:17; Hosea 11:11.
