Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אֱוִיל מְרֹדַךְ [Evil-merodach], pr.n. of a king of Babylon, who at length liberated Jehoiachin king of Judah, who had been long held in captivity by Nebuchadnezzar, 2 Kings 25:27; Jeremiah 52:31. He succeeded Nebuchadnezzar in his dominion, and held it, according to Berosus (in Jos. c. Ap. i. 20), for two years. As to the signification, מְרֹדַךְ (which see) is the name of a Babylonian idol, and אֱוִיל in Hebrew signifies fool; but it may be taken for granted that some other noun of Assyrian or Persian origin is concealed in it, which the Jews moulded so as to resemble their own language; perhaps pleasing themselves in calling, for the sake of derision, the king of their oppressors, “the fool (worshipper) of Merodach.”
