Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בָּשָׂר once in pl. בְּשָׂרִים Proverbs 14:30 m., flesh. As to its etymology, see the root. (Syr. ܒܣܶܪܳܐ, Ch. בִּסְרָא and בִּשְׂרָא id., Arab. بَشَرُ and بَشَرةَُ denote the exterior skin, and metaph. the human race, a signification which is taken from flesh.) Used

(a) of the flesh of the living body, whether of men or of beasts, Genesis 41:2, 19 Genesis 41:19; Job 33:21, 25 Job 33:25 once apparently for the skin itself (compare Arab.); Psalms 102:6, in describing extreme wasting, דָּבְקָה עַצְמִי לִבְשָׂרִי “my bone cleaveth to my skin.”

(b) used of the flesh of cattle which is eaten, Exodus 16:12; Leviticus 7:19; Numbers 11:4, 13 Numbers 11:13. Job 31:31, in praise of his hospitality, מִי יִתֵּן מִבְּשָׂרוֹ לֹא נִשְׂבַּע “who is there that was not satisfied with his flesh” (i.e. in his feasts)? Flesh is also used

(1) More generally for the whole body; opp. to נֶפֶשׁ Isaiah 10:18; Job 14:22. Proverbs 14:30, חַיֵּי בְשָׂרִים לֵב מַרְפֵּה “the welfare of the body is a tranquil heart;” sometimes with the added notion of weakness and proneness to sin (Matthew 26:41), Ecclesiastes 2:3, 5:5.

(2) of all living creatures. כָּל־בָּשָׂר “all living creatures,” Genesis 6:13, 17, 19 7:15, 16, 21 8:17 specially all men, the whole human race, Genesis 6:12; Psalms 65:3, 145:21 Isaiah 40:5, Isaiah 40:6. Very often used as opposed to God and his power (רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים, הָרִוּחַ), with the notion of weakness and frailty. Genesis 6:3; Job 10:4, הַעֵינֵי בָשָׂר לָךְ “hast thou mortal eyes?” i.e. dull, not-clear-sighted; Isaiah 31:3, “The Egyptians are men, not gods, סוּסֵיהֶם בָּשָׂר וְלֹא רוּחַ their horses are flesh, not endued with divine power;” Psalms 56:5, 78:39 Jeremiah 17:5 compare 2 Corinthians 10:4. In the New Test. similarly σὰρξ καὶ αἷμα, opp. to God and the Holy Spirit, Matthew 16:17; Galatians 1:16.

(3) עַצְמִי וּבְשָׂרִי “my bone and my flesh,” used often of a relative. Genesis 29:14; Judges 9:2; 2 Samuel 5:1, 19:13, 14 2 Samuel 19:14 comp. Genesis 2:23 also simply בְּשָׂרִי Genesis 37:27, כִּי אָחִינוּ בְשָׂרֵנוּ הוּא. Used of any other man, as being our brother, Isaiah 58:7. Comp. שְׁאֵר.

(4) by a euphemism for pudenda viri (compare Gr. σῶμα), more fully בְּשַׂר עֶרְוָה flesh of nakedness (Exodus 28:42). Genesis 17:11, seq.; Leviticus 15:2, Leviticus 15:3, Leviticus 15:7, 19 Leviticus 15:19.
