בָּעַר fut. יִבְעַר

(1) pr. to feed upon, to eat up, to consume, see Piel and Hiphil No. 1, and בְּעִיר cattle, so called from depasturing (Syr. ܒܰܥܰܪ to glean, to gather a bundle; ܒܘܽ ܥܳܪܐܳ gleaning, gathered bundle).

(2) Specially, to consume with fire (comp. אָכַל No. 2), to burn up (Ch. בְּעַר to burn; Pael, to kindle). Psalms 83:15, כְּאֵשׁ תִּבְעַר יַעַר “as the fire burneth a wood;” commonly followed by בְּ Job 1:16, “the fire of God fell from heaven, וַתִּבְעַר בַּצּאֹן וּבַנְּעָרִים and burned up the sheep and the young men.” Numbers 11:3; Psalms 106:18; Isaiah 42:25; Jeremiah 44:6; Lamentations 2:3 also, to kindle, Isaiah 30:33. Elsewhere, intrans.

(a) to be consumed with fire, Exodus 3:3; Isaiah 1:31, 9:17.

(b) to burn as fire, Jeremiah 20:9 pitch, Isaiah 34:9 a coal, Ezekiel 1:13 applied to anger, Isaiah 30:27; Psalms 79:5, 89:47.

(1) to depasture a field, a vineyard, Isaiah 3:14, 5:5 followed by בְּ Exodus 22:4.

(2) i.q. Kal No. 2, to kindle, as fire, Exodus 35:3 wood, Leviticus 6:5 also, to burn, to consume, Nehemiah 10:35; Isaiah 44:15, 40:16 בִּעֵר אֵשׁ בְּ to set fire to any thing, Ezekiel 39:9, 10 Ezekiel 39:10.

(3) to take away, to remove, to exterminate. 1 Kings 22:47, “and the remnant of the Sodomites מִן־הָאָרֶץ בִּעֵר he removed from the land.” Deuteronomy 26:13, 14 Deuteronomy 26:14; 2 Samuel 4:11; 2 Kings 23:24; 2 Chronicles 19:3. The customary phrase in Deuteronomy, when the punishment of death is commanded, is this, בִּעַרְתָּ הָרָע מִקִּרְבְּךָ “thou shalt take away this wickedness from amongst you,” Deuteronomy 13:6, 17:7 19:19 21:21 22:21, 24 Deuteronomy 22:24, 24:7 or מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל Deuteronomy 17:12, 22:22 compare Judges 20:13. (As to the synonymous phrases of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, see the root בָּרַת ). Isaiah 6:13, “yet a tenth part shall remain in the land, וְשָׁבָה וְהָֽיְתָה לְבָעֵר and this shall again be exterminated.” Numbers 24:22, יִהְ יֶה לְבָעֵר קַיִן “the Kenites shall be exterminated.” Isaiah 4:4, “when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion … בָּעֵר בְּרוּחַ מִשְׁפָּט וּבְרוּחַ with the spirit of judgment and with the spirit of extermination,” i.e. by judging and exterminating the wicked by his spirit, or his divine power. Constr. also followed by אַחֲרֵי, as implying that one who exterminates and expels another, follows and pursues after him. 1 Kings 14:10, יָרָֽבְעָם כַּאֲשֶׁר יְבַעֵר הַגָּלָל וּבִעַרְתִּי אַחֲרֵי בֵית־ְ “and I will exterminate the house of Jeroboam, as dung is cast out.” 1 Kings 21:21.

Pual, to be kindled, of a furnace, Jeremiah 36:22.

Hiphil

(1) to depasture, i.q. Piel No. 1, Exodus 22:5.

(2) i.q. Piel No. 2, to kindle, Exodus 22:6 to burn, to burn up, with an acc. Ezekiel 5:2; Judges 15:5. With the addition of בָּאֵשׁ 2 Chronicles 28:3 הִבְעִיר אֵשׁ בְּ to put fire to any thing, Judges 15:5, init.
