- a ruler of a synagogue, probably near the western shore of the Sea of Galilee
Ἰάειρος, Ἰαειρου (cf. Buttmann, 18 (16)), ὁ (יָאִיר (i. e. whom Jehovah enlightens), Numbers 32:41), Jairus (pronoun, Ja-i'-rus), a ruler of the synagogue, whose daughter Jesus restored to life: Mark 5:22; Luke 8:41. (Cf. B. D. American edition, under the word.)

Apart from the Gospels (Mark 5:22, Luke 8:41) this name is found in the Greek Bible in Esther 2:5 Μαρδοχαῖος ὁ τοῦ Ιαείρου. A similar form occurs in Wilcken Ostr 1231 (Thebes—Ptol.) Θεόδωρος καὶ Ἀβαιοῦς καὶ Σκύμνος Ἰαείρῃ χα (ίρειν).
