Zuph

The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

  1. A Levite, and one of the ancestors of the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 1:1); in the parallel passage, 1 Chronicles 6:11 (A. V. 26), he is called Zophai.
  2. A country, perhaps so called because it was inhabited by the family of Zuph (1 Samuel 9:5). It seems to have been connected with Ramathaim-zophim (1 Samuel 1:1), since both places are mentioned together with Mount Ephraim (comp. ib. 9:4-5).
