The Nuttall Encyclopedia

A precipitous cliff-bound island lying well out in the Atlantic, 1200 m. off the W. coast of Africa; belongs to Britain; celebrated as Napoleon Bonaparte's place of imprisonment from 1815 till his death in 1821. Jamestown, the capital, is a second-class coaling station for the navy, and is fortified.
