Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(עַיר, wakeing), a class of angelic beings mentioned in the description of Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Daniel 4:13-17). The Chaldeans appear to have believed that God had delegated the moral government of the earth to celestial spirits, who had the charge of making inquisition into human actions, and punishing the guilty.
