Sounding Board
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a board or structure, canopy or tester, with a flat surface, suspended over a pulpit to prevent the sound of the preacher's voice from ascending, and thus sending it out farther in a horizontal direction.
