Shimri

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Heb. Shimri" '' שַׁמְרַי , my watch, or vigilant), the name of four Hebrews.

1. (Sept. Σεμρί , v. r. Σαμάρ, Σαμαρίας.) Son of Shemaiah and father of Jedaiah, chief Simeonites (1 Chronicles 4:37). B.C. post 1618.

2. (Sept. Σαμερί v. r. Σαμαρί .).p) Father of. Jediael (q.v.), one of David's body-guard (1 Chronicles 11:45). B.C. ante 1043.

3. (Sept. Φυλάσσοντες , reading שֹׁמְרֵי .) Son of Hosah, a Merarite Levite appointed by David a doorkeeper of the ark. Although not the first-born, his father made him chief among his brothers (1 Chronicles 26:10; A.V. '"Simri"). B.C. 1043.

4. (Sept. Σαμβρί v. r. Ζαμβρί .) First named of the two, sons. of. Elizaphan, and one of the Levites who assisted at the purification of the Temple under Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 29:13). B.C. '726.
