Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
is hence also the title in the Roman Catholic Church of the archbishop or bishop of a diocese. The pope himself is styled the sovereign pontifex, or pontiff (q.v.). (J. H. W.)
