Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Heb. Yishvi', יַשְׁוַי, uniform), the name of two men.

1. (Sept. in Genesis 46:17, Ι᾿εύλ; Vulg. Jessui, Auth. Vers. "Isui;" in Numbers 26:44, Ι᾿εσού, Jessui, "Jesui;" in 1 Chronicles 7:30, Ι᾿ησουϊ v , Jessui, "shuai"). The third named of the sons of Asher, and founder of a family that bore his name ("Jesuites," Numbers 26:44). B.C. 1856.

2. (Septuag. Ι᾿εσσουί , Josephus Ι᾿εσούς, Ant. 6. 6, 6; Vulg. Jessui, Auth.Vers. "Ishui"). The second named of the three oldest sons of king Saul (1 Samuel 14:49); probably the same with ABINADAB (1 Samuel 31:2; comp. 1 Chronicles 8:33). (See ISH-BOSHETIT).
