Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Gr. ἐρημός , desert), one devoted to religious solitude; properly, the solitude of a wilderness. It became, at a later period, the name of certain classes of monks. (See MONASTICISM); (See MONE).
