Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(τραπεζίτης, so called from the table used for holding; the coin (See CHANGER OF MONEY) ), a broker or banker (i.e., bench-man) (See BANK), one who exchanged money, and also received money on deposit at interest, in order to loan it out to others at a higher rate (Matthew 25:27).
