Engelbrechtsen (or Engelberts), Cornelis

an old Dutch painter, was born at Leyden in 1468, and studied the works of Hans van Eyck. The following are some of his noted pieces: The Taking down from the Cross; Abraham about to Sacrifice Isaac; Scenes from the Life of the Virgin. His best work, however, was an altar-piece in the Church of St. Peter, at Leyden, representing the Adoration of the Lamb, as described in the Apocalypse. He died at Leyden in 1533. See Spooner, Biog.
